Hateruma is Japan's southernmost inhabited island. Sugarcane grows across much of the land, with a small village and coast never far away. A visit works best with a few clear priorities and space in the timetable.
Decide what brings you here: time by the sea, a planned diving experience, or a quieter stay.
Let the water be part of the day.
Nishihama is the white-sand beach associated with the island's blue water. We especially value Hateruma's sea and the opportunities to dive. The coast itself can be reason enough to come.
If you want to dive or enter the water, arrange suitable local guidance and check the conditions for that activity. Visibility and an attractive reef do not establish whether a spot is appropriate for your experience. A shore visit is also a complete way to enjoy the sea.
A different view at Takanazaki.
Cape Takanazaki has a rugged coastline and a monument marking the southern end of Japan's inhabited islands. The open-ocean view is different from Nishihama's sandy shore.
Arrange transport that suits the distance, weather and everyone in your group. You might combine the cape with a village stop, then leave the rest of the day open. Follow the marked visitor areas and give exposed edges plenty of space.
Consider staying for the evening.
Small guesthouses and villas make an overnight stay possible. Hateruma is also known for its night sky, although clear conditions can never be promised. If you would like an evening on the island, arrange somewhere to sleep and ask about meals before booking the outward journey.
A day trip may suit your available time. For an overnight stay, leave room after your return as well as before it. Avoid placing a Hateruma visit immediately before an essential connection.

The ferry from Ishigaki is one way to reach Hateruma. Check the current service and return options with the operator before committing to a plan, because departure times and conditions can change.
Ask your accommodation or activity provider how port transfers and local transport work for your booking. If conditions interrupt travel, discuss the new plan with them. A postponed crossing may affect both your time on Hateruma and the days that follow.
