Okinawa Main Island offers a way to combine time in Naha with Ryukyuan history, museums and journeys farther along the coast. It suits a trip in which city experiences and historical places are part of the plan.
Its size calls for clear choices during a short stay. Decide which part of the island you want to explore and choose your base around that.
Miyako: a stay centred on the coast.
Miyako is a good place to consider for beaches, coastal drives and time near the water. Bridges connect several of the surrounding islands, making that part of the journey different from the ferry-based trips around Yaeyama.
Miyako also has its own communities and traditions. Choose a beach stay if it fits your interests. Clear water does not guarantee suitable swimming conditions.
Ishigaki and Yaeyama: several kinds of island life.
Ishigaki brings food, shops and other city facilities together with countryside, mountains and beaches. It can be the whole holiday. If you want something different, the wider archipelago includes Taketomi's village life and Iriomote's forest and rivers.
A visit to another island involves a real journey, with its own transport and weather considerations. Give each island enough time.
Choose one place well before adding another.
For a first Ishigaki stay, our starting point is at least three full days: one for the city, one for the wider island, and one for more Ishigaki or a nearby island. A longer stay leaves more room for both exploration and rest.
