Food & everyday life

A return to Joo Chiat Cafe.

A familiar stop in Kabira: a personal account of food, conversation and returning to Joo Chiat Cafe.

It’s been several years now since we found the then new lovely Joo Chiat Cafe on our way to another cafe in Kabira, Ishigaki. Still it is one of our favorite cafes to go. The owners are just so kind and always in for a chat.

This family previously lived in Singapore, which is why the menu features a mix of Singaporean and international dishes.

Upon arrival, it’s immediately clear that the family who runs the restaurant has an appreciation for gardening and nature. They’ve beautifully created a charming garden surrounding their traditional Ishigaki home, adding to the inviting atmosphere.

You could enjoy your coffee or lunch outside on the terras overlooking the garden. The garden is full of local herbs, flowers and brought plants from Singapore. With the light breeze going through the house, veranda and garden it was a pleasure to sit here together.

Joo Chiat Cafe is named after the area where the family lived in Singapore. According to them an area with great international food and a place where many nationalities live together harmoniously. She would love her cafe to be a reflection of this.

The café has longer opening hours with warm dishes and handmade drinks and sweets and offers dinner by reservation.
